GUP is one of the initiatives under NKEA for rubber. In May 2011, MRB started a project involved approximately 105 hectares of aboriginal land in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak which are planted with 57,600 polybag of high quality of rubber seedlings. This project will to enable the aboriginal community who are not involved in new planting programme to plant their field with high quality rubber planting materials recommended by MRB. It will prevent them from using low quality rubber seedlings which will give negative impact.
MRB has received very encouraging feedback. As at 30th November, a total of 4,877 applications have been received which covered approximately 5,500 hectares.
The use of high quality rubber planting materials is not enough because technology transfer cannot be done individually. Therefore, the target of increasing participant’s income and their standards of living cannot be achieved. To address this, Getah untuk Pribumi has been proposed. Pribumu (natives) are defined as Aboriginal in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
This project was undertaken on land which has been gazetted to the aboriginal community, aliented land (native title) in selected locations in Sabah and Sarawak. The concepts of clusters were developed for this project as a model for aboriginal communities nearby. A total of eight locations were selected involving 26 villages consisting of 501 participants and an area of 639.1 hectares.
In additions, the participants will transfer the technology of rubber planting to communities nearby. Therefore, it is hoped the aboriginal community in Malaysia will be modern and on par with other rubber growers in Malaysia.
