The
Brown Bast Syndrome of Hevea Brasiliensis By
H.Y.Yeang
(published in 2007)
This monograph serves as a useful reference pertaining to the problem
of brown bast in rubber trees. The document describes research on
the epidemiology (susceptibility of trees), symptoms (changes to the
bark and latex), cause (pathogenic and physiological) and treatment
(preventive and remedial) of this disorder that has been a feature
of the planting industry from the time rubber was first cultivated.
The review covers the broad aspects of brown bast research ranging
from the early observations of pioneering planters to the most recent
findings of molecular biologists.

Genetic
Transformation of Hevea Brasiliensis By
P. Arokiaraj, Hafsah Jaafar and H.Y.Yeang
(published in 2004)
In genetic transformation, the productivity of the crop plant can
be increased by inserting into the plant the genes that control specific
agronomic traits, leaving the plant’s other characteristics
generally unaltered. In the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB), its research
arm, the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia, developed the first
genetically modified or transgenic rubber plant in the world. The
MRB researchers seek to turn transgenic rubber tree into a factory
for the production of valuable proteins such as pharmaceuticals in
the latex, something of value and direct use to the end consumer.
The rubber tree is a unique plant in that its crop harvest, through
latex tapping, is non-destructive in nature. This confers upon the
tree, an advantage not found among other crop plants that are engineered
to produce recombinant proteins: production of the target recombinant
protein in the tapped latex is continual. Thus, reports by MRB researchers
of their success in producing a recombinant antibody and recombinant
human serum albumin in the latex of transgenic rubber plants are very
encouraging.
This monograph documents this critical research milestones that
MRB has achieved and to enable an appraisal of the progress made.
