MRB-Designed Rubber Buffer for a Smoother Monorail Ride

YB Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui, Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities recently witnessed the official handover of monorail rubber buffers from Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) and MTrans Technology Berhad to KL Monorail System Sdn Bhd. The ceremony was held at the MTrans Manufacturing and Engineering Facility in Brickfields. Also present at the event was Dato' Dr Kamarul Baharain bin Basir, Director General of Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) and Chairman of RRIMCORP, Mr David Chew, Chairman of MTrans Technology Berhad and En Bakhtiar Jamilee, Managing Director of KL Monorail System Sdn Bhd.

YB Datuk Peter Chin together with the guests had earlier taken a monorail ride from Bukit Nanas monorail station to Tun Sambathan monorail station to experience the new MRB-designed rubber buffers which is able to eliminate the excessive displacement and uncomfortable ride due to the 90 degrees sharp turn along the train route. They were then picked up and escorted to the MTrans Manufacturing and Engineering Facility.

"It is a great achievement for the MRB in line with the government's policy to increase the production of value added locally. With this achievement, we hope it will lead to other Light Rail Transit (LRT) system such as PUTRA and STAR to apply the new MRB components for their train and also to support the local rubber products usage" said Dato' Dr Kamarul, Director General of Malaysian Rubber Board.

MRB was approached in November 2005 to produce new rubber buffers for KL Monorail to provide a smooth ride for passengers at a more economical price while maintaining the quality and meeting the requirements specified.

MRB Technology and Engineering Division in collaboration with TARRC have successfully designed a new rubber buffer using the Finite Element Analysis. The technical input from TARRC has enabled the design and development work to be completed in less than two months.
