The
oldest surviving rubber tree is still growing in Kuala Kangsar, Perak.
This specimen came from the original batch of seedlings from Brazil.
Located on the grounds of the Kuala Kangsar District Office, the trunk
at 150cm from ground level measures a diameter of 500cm.
In 1876, Henry Wickham shipped some 70,000
Hevea brasiliensis seeds from Brazil, of which about 2700 seeds germinated
at Kew Botanic Gardens near London, England. Almost 2000 seedlings
were then despatched to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and in 1877, 22 plants
were shipped from Ceylon to Singapore. Half of the seedlings were
planted in Singapore and nine in Kuala Kangsar, Malaysia (then Malaya).
