  The Oldest Surviving Rubber Tree

The oldest surviving rubber tree is still growing in Kuala Kangsar, Perak.The oldest surviving rubber tree is still growing in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. This specimen came from the original batch of seedlings from Brazil. Located on the grounds of the Kuala Kangsar District Office, the trunk at 150cm from ground level measures a diameter of 500cm.

In 1876, Henry Wickham shipped some 70,000 Hevea brasiliensis seeds from Brazil, of which about 2700 seeds germinated at Kew Botanic Gardens near London, England. Almost 2000 seedlings were then despatched to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and in 1877, 22 plants were shipped from Ceylon to Singapore. Half of the seedlings were planted in Singapore and nine in Kuala Kangsar, Malaysia (then Malaya).
