The newly established MRB State Office for Kedah, Perlis and Pulau Pinang located in Sungai Petani, Kedah Darul Aman was declared opened by YB Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui, the Honourable Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, on 14 January 2008. Also in attendance were YB Dato' Dr Shuib bin Saedin, Exco for Agriculture, Kedah, Y Bhg Datu Dr Michael Dosim Lunjew, Secretary General Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities and Y Bhg Dato' Dr Kamarul Baharain bin Basir, Director General MRB.
Kedah is one of the 14 states in Malaysia and is situated to the north of Peninsula Malaysia. Although known as the "rice - bowl of Malaysia", Kedah also posess large areas of land under rubber. Currently, the rubber hectarage in Kedah is 154,000 hectares, considered to be one of the largest areas under rubber in Malaysia. Out of that, some 92,000 hectares are owned by rubber smallholders.
Apart from being the administrative centre, the MRB Office in Kedah will co-ordinate all activities pertaining to the rubber industry that spans the three northern-most states which are Kedah, Perlis and Penang. These activities include transfer of technology activities to rubber related agencies such as FELDA, FELCRA, RISDA and rubber smallholders as well as rubber licensing and enforcement activities.
The opening ceremony was well attended by
some 800 guests amongst them were smallholders, rubber dealers and
traders as well as officers from rubber-related agencies and relevant
government departments. Highlights of the event were (i) opening of
the RRIM DRC Test Laboratory (ii) launching of the Guide Chart to
Determine DRC of Cuplumps and (iii) launching of DRC-eLiMS.
