The state-level LITS 3 Scheme has been launched beginning with Johore. On 17 January 2008, Y.B. Senator Dr S. Vijayaratnam launched the Scheme in Segamat, Johore.
The objective of LITS 3 Scheme is to help smallholders increase their rubber production and income through the use of latex harvesting technologies based on the concept of Low Intensity Tapping System or LITS approved by MRB. LITS, introduced to rubber planters by MRB since the mid-1990s, as been proven to effectively overcome the shortage of skilled tappers problem without jeopardizing estate or smallholding production.
The adoption of LITS technology amongst the rubber smallholders has not been encouraging due to the high initial capital outlay required. The Malaysian Government, realising their predicament, has introduced the LITS Scheme, by allocating a specific amount of fund to enable smallholders to adopt this technology recommended by MRB. Currently, LITS 3 Scheme is in operation, after the earlier LITS 1 and LITS 2 Schemes, and the allocation is being managed by MRB.
