Hevea Garden

A garden consisting of rubber trees has been established on the grounds of the secondary school of SM St Michael's in Penampang, Sabah. The garden, known as Taman Sains Hevea, is the brainchild of YB Tan Sri Bernard Giluk Dompok, Minister of Plantation industries and Commodities. On hand to officiate the launch of Taman Sains Hevea was the Minister himself. Mrs Marie Yong Pik Hua, Principal of SM St Michael's Penampang and YBhg Dato’ Dr Kamarul Baharain Basir, Director General of the Malaysian Rubber Board(LGM), were amongst those present at the launch.

Tan Sri Bernard Dompok in his speech said that the rubber tree is a Tree of Life. He akined it to an ATM located in the rural area. He said that the rubber industry in Malaysia will continue to be relevant to the country's economy. By introducing the crop to the young people through the extracurricular activity of the school will kindle the interest of the students and thus he hoped would help to sustain the continued growth of the industry in Malaysia.

Mrs Marie Young, the School's Principal, explained that SM St Michael is the pioneer of such a project, a collaboration between the School's Entrepreneur Club and LGM). The aim, she added, is to expose the students to technologies related to rubber and at the same time the school can be a source of reference on the crop for the surrounding area. It is hoped that with the knowledge on rubber, the students can later pursue studies beneficial to the further development of the rubber industry or even venture out to be entrepreneurs.

Some 40 students who are members of the Club, led by Luzud Mosigil, were given training by staff of LGM regional Office at Kota Kinabalu on how to budgraft, prune, set up a nursery and maintain the garden. The Entreprenuer Club of the school is supervised by two teachers, Mr Abdul Wahab and Ms Mariatul Hanis.
