  Good Performance by Commodity Sector in 2007

Statistics on Commodities 2007The exports of commodities and commodity-based products in 2007 showed tremendous achievement. The total export earnings recorded a total of RM89.6 billion as compared to RM76.05 billion in 2006 with a growth of 17.81% and contributed 14.81% to the total export earnings of the nation.

The export values for commodities in 2007 are as follows: palm oil RM45.61 billion, natural rubber RM17.66 billion, cocoa RM 2.59 billion, tobacco RM 901.37 million, pepper RM 186.65 million and timber RM 22.65 billion.

When releasing the statistics at a function on 5 May 2008, Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui, Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, said that the significant export earnings of the primary commodities and products continued to place the plantation industries and commodities sector as an important contributor to the growth of the country's economy in general and the agricultural sector in particular. "The plantation industries and commodities sector maintained its contribution of 5% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provided employment to 1.4 million people", explained Datuk Peter Chin.

The comprehensive statistical information on the plantation industries and commodities is contained in the latest edition of "Statistics on Commodities 2007" released by the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities at the function.
