On 3rd July 2012, the Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre (TARRC), Brickendonbury, witnessed the handover ceremony of Malaysia’s “Green” EKOPRENA® Tyres and the signing of MoU between Malaysian Rubber Board and South Mimms Travel. YBhg Datuk Wira Ahmad Hamzah, Chairman of MRB and YBhg Datuk Dr Salmiah Ahmad were present at the MoU with Dr Kamarudin Ab Malek, TARRC’s CEO and Dr Stuart Cook, the Director of Research.
This occasion marks the start of a programme of testing of Malaysia’s ‘green’ tyre tread materials on commercial vehicles in service, commencing with tests on the vehicles of a local coach company, South Mimms Travel.
South Mimms Travel is a bus and coach company, based in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. It has been chosen for the trials because of the proximity to the research centre, the availability of appropriate vehicles and the company’s commitment to sustainable transport.
The Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre has already demonstrated the suitability of Malaysia’s epoxidised natural rubber, known as Ekoprena™, for tyre treads. Trials such as these, to evaluate the performance of silica reinforced Ekoprena™ tyres on commercial vehicles, will form a very important contribution to the assessment of the market potential for Ekoprena™ in this sector.
