Dr Kamarul obtained his Diploma in Engineering from UiTM in 1974. He then went for further studies at the University of Strathclyde, UK in 1979 where he obtained a BSc (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering. Subsequently, he completed his PhD at the Institute of Polymer Technology, Loughborough University of Technology, UK in 1985.

Dr Kamarul started his career with the then Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia, now the Malaysian Rubber Board, in 1976 as a Research Officer.
