  Malaysian Rubber Trade and Business Mission to Shanghai and Qingdao,
     China

The Rubber Trade and Business Mission to Shanghai and Qingdao, China on 17 - 23 August 2005, recently organised by the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB), was timely as the strong demand from China for rubber and rubber products was on the increase in line with their robust growth in the automobile industry. The Mission to China was successful as Malaysian delegates were able to foster new ties and strengthen existing business networking with their Chinese counterparts.

The Mission, headed by Chairman MRB, Y Bhg Tan Sri Dato' Dr Abdullah Mohd Tahir, comprised 23 members of the Malaysian rubber industry who represented, among others, MARDEC, FELDA, the Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council (MREPC), the Malaysian Rubber Products Manufacturers Association (MRPMA) and leading processors, traders and product manufacturers of the Malaysian rubber industry.

The objective of the Mission, inter alia are:
  • to foster ties between exporters/processors in Malaysia and importers and users of natural rubber in China;
  • to explore business opportunities and collaboration as well as increase trade and economic cooperation between the private sectors of Malaysia and China;
  • to promote exports of Malaysian rubber and rubber products, and
  • to strengthen existing business network in China
The Mission met with prominent organisations that are involved in the rubber industry, both in Shanghai and Qingdao. In Shanghai, MRB delegates visited the Shanghai Rubber Futures Exchange and SINOCHEM International Corporation while in Qingdao the Mission took the opportunity to visit Qingdao Sailun Tyre Factory as well as SINOCHEM Qingdao. At all these meetings, the Mission was received by top officials and the discussions were fruitful touching a wide range of topics involving the rubber industry.

A seminar cum dialogue with Chinese counterparts involved in rubber and rubber products was also organised in both, Shanghai and Qingdao. These seminars were well attended and Mission delegates were able to interact closely with Chinese buyers with a view of venturing into future businesses and joint-ventures. During the Mission, rubber product manufacturers were able to promote and explore prospects for investment in China. Rubber products identified with potential in the China market include pharmaceutical rubber-based products, hoses, foam mattresses and pre-cured thread.
