LITS 3 Programme
was officially launched by Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui, Minister of
Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC) on 5 November 2007
at Bekenu, Miri, Sarawak. LITS is the acronym for Low Intensity
Tapping System. The programme is opened to rubber smallholders throughout
the country.
At the national level launch, Datuk Peter
Chin said that he is confident that LITS 3 is an effective way to
boost rubber production and consequently increase the country's
export capacity. He further explained that apart from increasing
latex production, LITS 3 also aims at increasing the income of rubber
smallholders and reducing the manpower problem facing the rubber
industry especially amongst the rubber smallholders many of whom
are old and unable to tap rubber frequently.
A total of 36, 210 hectares is expected
to come under LITS 3 programme, representing about 4% of the 900,000
hectares of productive rubber planted area in the country. For the
period 2006 - 2008, an average production of 1700 kg per hectare
per year is targeted.
Also present at the official launch were
YB Rosey Yunus, Bekenu Assemblywoman, Datu Dr Michael Dosim Lunjew,
Secretary General MPIC and Chairman of Malaysian Rubber Board as
well Dato' Dr Kamarul Baharain Basir, Director General of Malaysian
Rubber Board.
