The
Malaysian Rubber Board Trade and MRE Promotion Mission to Shanghai
and Qingdao, China on
5 - 11 September 2007, recently organised by the Malaysian Rubber
Board (MRB), has achieved the objective of strengthening the ties
of cooperation between the Chinese importers and Malaysian exporter
and also between the MRB and the organisations visited.
The Mission headed by the Director General
of MRB, Y Bhg Dato' Dr Kamarul Baharain bin Basir, comprised 20 members
from the Malaysian rubber trade industry including leading processors
and traders. The objectives of the Mission, inter alia are:
- to foster better and stronger ties between exporters/processors
in Malaysia and importers and users of natural rubber in China;
- to explore business opportunities and collaboration avenues
to increase trade and economic cooperation between the private
sectors of Malaysia and China;
- to promote Malaysian Rubber Exchange (MRE) as the hub for rubber
trade and encourage Chinese companies to be MRE associate members;
and
- to strengthen existing business networking.
The Malaysian delegation visited key organisations involved in the
rubber trade and industry both in Shanghai and Qingdao. In Shanghai,
the Malaysian delegation visited the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE)
and Sinochem International Corporation and in Qingdao, the Qingdao
International Rubber Exchange Market (QinRex) and the Qingdao Free
Trade Zone. During these visits, the Mission was received by senior
officials and the discussions which touched on a wide range of topics
involving the rubber industry were very fruitful.
A seminar cum dialogue was held with members of the China Rubber Industry
Association (CRIA) Tyre Branch in Shanghai and also the China Chamber
of International Commerce (Rubber Commerce Branch) in Qingdao. During
the seminars, MRB presented two papers titled (i) Malaysian Rubber
Industry - An Overview and (ii) Role and Functions of the Malaysian
Rubber Exchange. The seminars/dialogues were well attended and both
the Malaysian delegates and the Chinese companies interacted closely
and exchanged information on the current scenario affecting the rubber
trade and industry in Malaysia and China. Some companies in China
had expressed interest in the future expansion plans of the rubber
industry in Malaysia and were keen to invest in the rubber plantation
sector especially in Sabah and Sarawak. A total of six companies have
indicated their interest in becoming associate members of the Malaysian
Rubber Exchange.
