MRB Trade and Business Mission to India, 20 - 25 Nov 2006

The Rubber Trade and Business Mission to Chennai and Cochin, India on 20 - 25 November 2006, recently organised by the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB), was timely as the strong demand from India for rubber and rubber products was on the increase in line with their robust growth in the automobile industry. The Mission to India was successful as Malaysian delegates were able to foster new ties and strengthen existing business networking with their Indian counterparts.

The Mission, headed by Deputy Director General (Research and Innovation), Dr Mohd Akbar Md Said comprised of members of the Malaysian rubber industry who represented, among others, MARDEC, RISDA, leading processors and traders of the Malaysian rubber industry. The objectives of the mission were to foster ties with our Indian counterparts and to explore business opportunities collaboration. Other objectives include, increasing trade and economic cooperation between the private sectors, to promote exports of Malaysian rubber as well as to strengthen existing business networking in India.

The five-day Mission included meetings with key officials in private companies related to rubber, as well as a visit to MRF Tyres in Chennai, the biggest tyre manufacturing company in India and MARDEC RK Latex in Cochin. A seminar cum dialogue with Indian counterparts involved in rubber and rubber products was also organised in Cochin. A meeting with members of the Automotive and Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) in Cochin proved fruitful whereby issues on price volatility, demand and quality were discussed. While in Cochin, delegates also attended the opening ceremony of the Asia Rub Tech 2006 International Conference organised by the Indian Rubber Institute.

The feed back received from delegates showed that the Mission to India was successful as Malaysian delegates were able to interact closely with Indian buyers during the meetings and seminar cum dialogue with a view of venturing into future businesses and possibly joint-ventures.
