Seminars On The Disposal of Vulcanised Rubber Waste

This year, the Registration and Rubber Exchange Division, Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) organised a series of seminars on the Disposal of Vulcanised Rubber Waste. This seminar is deemed important as the MRB as well as the rubber industry have to uphold Malaysia's reputation as a top quality SMR producer in the world.

This seminar was successfully held in three locations in Shah Alam on 4th July 2006, in Butterworth on 12th July 2006 and in Johor Bharu on 25th July 2006. The response from participants were encouraging and beyond expectations. The tremendous support showed that the Malaysian rubber industry was well aware and concerned on the quality of SMR exports. In all, a total of 252 participants attended the 3 seminars.

The seminar was officiated by the Y. Bhg. Dato' Dr. Kamarul Baharin Basir, Director General of MRB, and four working papers were presented by MRB, Department of Environment and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government through out all three seminars.

In his opening remarks, the Director General stressed the importance of maintaining the quality of rubber produced in Malaysia and uphold the image of Malaysia as a top quality rubber producer. This is vital as the cases of SMR contamination reported in the country doubled in the previous year (2005) with 11 cases, whereas in 2004, there were 5 cases. Such cases will not only cause substantial losses to the SMR sector, but also tarnish the image of the country as a quality rubber producer.

In all, the objective of the seminar was achieved, which is to guarantee SMR quality, and ensure that factory operators and contractors understand their roles in achieving zero SMR contamination. The seminar also provides participants an opportunity to further enhance relations with other industry players, and meeting possible new clients.

It was hoped that the seminar will create greater awareness and better management in rubber waste disposal thus maintaining SMR quality and ensures that it is always a premium rubber in the global market.
