The Malaysian Rubber Exchange (MRE) Unit recently organised a half-day
Seminar for MRE Panel of Arbitrators at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur on 1 December 2005.
The seminar was an overwhelming success as it was well-attended by members of the Panel.
The seminar was officiated by the Deputy Director-General MRB (P&O), Madam Chan Lai Har,
who delivered the keynote address. This was followed by four (4) sessions. Mr Quah Swee Kheng, of the
MRE Unit gave an overview of the MRE Arbitration Process, whereby he briefly touched on the relevant
MRE Act and Rules governing the arbitration process for the rubber industry and the proposed changes
to the current MRE Bye Laws pertaining to arbitration.
The session continued with speakers from the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for
Arbitration (KLRCA). Legal counsel Dato' Noorashikin Tan Sri Abdul Rahim briefed participants on the
facilities provided by the KLRCA and Ms Yeo Yee Ling covered the topic on Alternative Dispute Resolution.
The last session saw the MRE legal adviser, Mr Manjit Singh, presenting topics which represent the very
core of arbitration such as the role and responsibilities of an Arbitrator, procedures at a hearing,
appeal process, enforcement of an arbitration award, etc. |
