Abstract
Latex Allergy and Recent Developments in Deproteinisation
of Natural Rubber Latex
Natural rubber latex is used in a large number of
useful products like gloves and condoms. Due to the threat of AIDS, hepatitis
and other infectious diseases, the worldwide use of materials like gloves
and condoms have increased. Allergy produced by latex proteins present in
these materials has been reported. The issue of latex protein allergy is
reviewed, giving emphasis to the types of allergy and ways to measure the
amount of protein present in natural rubber latex. Proteins can be removed
effectively from latex products, either in the latex stage itself or from
the products. Emphasis has been given to the different ways in which proteins
present in latex products can be reduced.
